About (J. J. Bartz)

Nearly 50 Years of Creating Original Wood Furnishings

Jim Bartz made his first table at about age 12. Although those early surfaces reflected his inexperience, they marked the beginning of a lifelong interest in woodworking. He later sold his first sculpture while still in college. His career path changed over time, but his passion for working with wood remained strong while he built a successful career in Houston, Texas.

After returning to Michigan in the early 1990s, Jim became a business consultant specializing in ISO 9001, AS9100 aerospace standards, ISO 14001 environmental standards, and other quality and environmental systems. His 30-year consulting career strengthened his focus on precision, quality, and responsible practices, but it never replaced his commitment to creating original furnishings.

Today, Jim brings nearly five decades of experience to Bartz Designs, producing modern furniture that balances natural form, practical function, and skilled craftsmanship. His work includes live-edge tables, custom tables, solid wood tables, and statement pieces for residential and professional spaces.

Each project begins with carefully selected materials and a clear understanding of the client’s needs. His approach to sustainable wood furniture also reflects the environmental standards that have influenced his professional life.

As Jim continues this creative chapter, his work reflects a renewed focus on originality and the belief that meaningful craftsmanship becomes stronger with time.

Inspired by Nature

Rare Woods Selected for Exceptional Furniture Design

J. J. Bartz has spent decades working within the custom furniture industry while building strong relationships with sawyers, artisans, collectors, and fellow wood enthusiasts. Alongside selling original work through shows and galleries, he has developed a loyal client base that has commissioned numerous handcrafted pieces, including live-edge tables, modern furniture, and statement furnishings for residential interiors.

One of Jim’s early workshops was located in the well-known Gibson Guitar building in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Many artists worked from that location until the building was sold and the creative community was required to leave. Although the closure was a difficult moment, Jim retained something highly valuable: an extensive collection of exotic and highly figured woods gathered through trusted contacts across the country.

Those carefully selected slabs have become long-term investments and the foundation for many original furnishings. Whenever possible, Jim documents the provenance of each piece of wood, preserving its history and showing the respect that goes into every finished project. This attention to material origin is especially important when creating a luxury coffee table, an organic modern coffee table, or other luxury living room furniture designed to serve as both a functional piece and a natural work of art.

The reclaimed redwood conference table is one example. Although the original table has been sold, enough of this extraordinary ancient redwood remains to create one final dining tabletop.

This rare material is now available for a custom commission. To discuss the piece or learn more about the remaining slabs, please contact Bartz Designs.
